WHY CREATE A CHILD THEME?
Creating a child theme allows you to make edits to your theme without the risk of affecting your main theme and most importantly keep the changes you’ve made when there is an update to the theme.
WordPress allows you to use child themes to make changes to and override your main – called “parent” – theme.
The creation of a child theme is pretty quick, and the installation is even quicker.
With the WordPress Child Theme Generator, you can generate your own child theme within two minutes and upload it to your wordpress installation.
Many themes come bundled with a child theme now such as BuddyBoss, Kadence etc but what if there isn’t a child theme available?
It’s really simple to do with a FREE online tool. So head over to our WordPress Child Theme Generator to create your custom child theme.
HOW TO DO IT
1: GO TO YOUR WORDPRESS INSTALLATION
Head to your wp-admin and Appearance > Themes and get the exact name of the theme you want to create your child theme for.
2: HEAD OVER TO THE CHILD THEME GENERATOR
This is where you’ll input the information to create your child theme. Click here.
3: COMPLETE THE DETAILS
Fill in the details on the form. Some information is auto-populated and if there’s a theme that has be imported before, you’ll see a message (as presented on the screenshot) that lets you know the theme is recognised. This generator still works even if the theme doesn’t update automatically.
4: CREATE YOUR THEME
Click the blue “Create you child theme now” button to download your new child theme.
5: UPLOAD YOUR CHILD THEME TO YOUR WORDPRESS INSTALLATION
Go to Appearance > Theme > Add New > Upload to upload your child theme.
6: ACTIVATE YOUR CHILD THEME
Once uploaded, your new child theme will check for the parent theme (which is why getting the name of the original theme correct is crucial). If this has been successful you’ll see the notification as highlighted below.
Click activate and you’re good to go!
